We’re in the thick of the NBA basketball season, and high school and college basketball are also tipping off this month. With basketball on the minds of many, including the team here at Stylehawk, we thought we’d highlight some of the premier basketball facilities in Southern California, and particularly in San Diego.
Basketball is huge in Southern California. It is played year round by many athletes. As such, there is constantly a demand for San Diego basketball venues that can accommodate large tournaments, leagues, and camps.
College campus gymnasiums are an obvious choice for large basketball events, and there are several great ones to choose from in San Diego, each with their own unique features.
Sol City SportCenter at Alliant International University
The Sol City SportCenter in San Diego is home to six regulation basketball courts on 51,000 square feet of continuous hardwood flooring. Courts can be rented out individually, or you can rent out the entire facility, which also includes a weight room, conference room, and concession area. Since Alliant International University no longer competes in intercollegiate athletics, the SportCenter may be more readily availability than other San Diego-area collegiate basketball facilities during the college basketball season.
Jenny Craig Pavilion at the University of San Diego
Opened in 2000, the Jenny Craig Pavilion is one of the most modern large sporting event venues in San Diego. The state-of-the-art facility can seat 5,000, and has high-tech, in-house sound, video, and messaging systems. The Jenny Craig Pavilion has hosted multiple West Coast Conference Basketball Championships, as well as the 2003 NFL Celebrity Basketball Game.
Golden Gymnasium at Point Loma Nazarene University
Located on one of the most beautiful college campuses in the world, Golden Gymnasium is one of the smaller San Diego area college basketball venues, but still a great option for basketball camps or tournaments.
RIMAC Arena at UC San Diego
The RIMAC arena is the multi-purpose facility that is home to the UCSD men’s and women’s basketball teams. With more than 200,000 square feet of space and 44,000 square feet of floor space, the arena allows up to five basketball courts to be used at once. The floors are spring-loaded with Robbins Bio-Cushion for improved shock absorption and uniform ball bounce. In addition, the RIMAC Arena also features state-of-the-art equipment, and additional meeting spaces.
Main Gym at UC San Diego
The Main Gym on the UCSD campus is the former home of the university’s basketball teams. It is much smaller than the newer RIMAC Arena on campus, but still has enough floor space to allow for two basketball courts to be used at once.
Using San Diego Sports Venues for Other Events
While most of the San Diego venues listed above are designed for sporting events like basketball or volleyball games, they are also ideal for many other types of indoor events, such as trade shows, concerts, lectures, or conventions. Other sporting events, like martial arts competitions, wrestling tournaments, or any other sporting event needing a large amount of indoor floor space could also be housed in one of these San Diego venues.
