Usually when people think of competitive rowing, they think of it as more of an East Coast sport—something that is done mostly at Ivy League schools. But believe it or not, San Diego actually has a very rich history of rowing. In June 1888, what is now known as the San Diego Rowing Club (SDRC) was founded. By the 1930s, the club had a membership of more than 1,200 rowers. The club was known for the economically diverse group of men it attracted—everyone from day laborers to bank presidents. One of the oldest women’s rowing clubs was also founded in San Diego just a few years later in 1892—the ZLAC Rowing Club. Out of this prestigious club have come several Olympians and multiple U.S. National team members.
